The Description:
A clear plastic box has a dollar bill inserted in the top and appears to be enclosed with no way to get it out. This wonderful little prop will help you clearly explain the Gospel Message.

The Routine:
Give your volunteer the box and show them that there is a dollar bill inside.
Say: This dollar belongs to you. I want you to have it. It is yours. You can have it. (really emphasize this point.) The dollar belongs to you no matter what, but I would like to see “IF” you can get it out of the box.
Say: Getting the dollar bill out of the box is not a requirement for ownership, you are just curious to see if they can get the dollar bill. (this is an important detail.) (Give them a few moments to try to get the bill out.)
Say: Well, you couldn’t get it, but I did say you COULD have the dollar. Would you like me to get the bill for you? (help them answer yes) (Take the box and put it behind your back, open it, remove the bill, close it, then show the dollar and the box)
Say: Notice the box is empty and I have the dollar bill in my hand, it is yours. (let them reach out and take the dollar from your hand, DO NOT give it to them. Nudge them to take it if needed.)
Say: What we just did here is a lot like what God did for us. You see, God loves us, and wants to have a relationship with us. He wants us to have eternal life. However, we are sinners and because of this we are not able to have a relationship with God. No matter how much we try, how much we give, or how good we are we are not able to have eternal life in heaven with Him. Because God is “just” He must punish us for our sin. But because God is “loving” He has provided a way for us to have eternal life.
Say: Just like you couldn’t get the bill out of the box on your own, you had to have my help. God did the same for us, we couldn’t get eternal life on our own, so He sent Jesus to pay the debt of our failure. He paid the price so we could have eternal life.
Say: Before the dollar bill was yours to use, you had to actually take it from my hand. Likewise knowing that Christ paid your way is not enough. You must take this gift. You do that thorough faith: belief that His death on the cross and His resurrection back to life has paid your way. He has forgiven your sin so you may have eternal life. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
